In May, The Hon Darren Chester, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, announced the $10 billion National Rail Program. The National Rail Program: Investing in rail networks for our cities and regions includes a commitment to developing faster rail linkages between cities and surrounding regional areas. That puts the Illawarra squarely in the frame as one of three projects that could win funding to progress a business case for faster rail between Wollongong and Sydney.
This is a $20m opportunity to demonstrate how enhanced connectivity between the Illawarra and Sydney can benefit both economies. This is an exciting prospect as a 60 minute rail commute to Sydney is practically possible, but requires significant contribution to both a business case and the actual cost of improvements on that line.
RDA Illawarra will collaborate with stakeholders to position our region for this opportunity.
