Port Kembla Outer Harbour Expansion

This project recognises the major economic impact of the Port of Port Kembla and potential significant increases in economic impact on the entire region resulting from expansion of the Outer Harbour.

The community consultation period closed in May 2010.  PKPC held two community information forums and following closure of the consultation 18 submissions were received. All were in support of the development but noted issues with transport such as infrastructure capacity of road and rail, and wider environmental effects such as air quality, noise, dust and protection of the green and gold bell frog.

The matters raised were addressed and approval was granted by the Department of Planning in March 2011 for construction of a bulk and container berth together with the reclamation and the master concept plan. Work on the reclamation is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2011. The approval was conditional on further work being undertaken before the next stage could be developed such as an outer harbour rail master plan. This work is currently underway.
